Tanzania Vol.2 a second Cleanup at Kawe Beach

Tanzania's biggest city and former capital Dar es Salaam lies on the shores of the Indian Ocean and would be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, 3.5 million kilograms of plastic are produced there every day—that’s half a kilogram per person per day. Only 30% of Dar es Salaam’s waste is disposed of properly. The rest lands in the sewers, streets, the forest and, of course, the numerous beaches.

With a population growing at a rate of 8% per year, a very low environmental consciousness in the country, and a plethora of poorly managed private waste companies, the trash problem is only accelerating. 

On Earth Day, we sponsored our first cleanup on Kawe Beach, and on July 31, we sponsored another one!

This time, 33 volunteers came together to pick up and dispose of over 700 kilograms of trash. When you combine that with the trash we were able to clean up at our last Kawe Beach operation, it’s over 1,700 kilograms of trash!

At this rate, we’ll have the beautiful beaches of Tanzania looking pristine in no time.
